Speech and Debate Team Honors
Congratulations to the Speech and Debate Team for several notable accomplishments this school year.
TMLA was this year’s recipient of the Msgr. Sean G. Ogle Award as the top Student Congress Team in the Diocese. This is the first time TMLA has won this award, and it is due largely through the efforts of our Student Congress coach Erin Mohr, a TMLA graduate and student at St. John’s University.
In this school year, TMLA Speech and Debate team qualified 6 students to compete at the National Catholic Speech and Debate Championship Tournament in Chicago: Seniors Cassidy Barry, Bridget Farrell and Anastasia Poulos, and Juniors Kaitlyn Chesleigh, Eliana Cortez and Rumaisa Rawshan.
In addition to these accomplishments, half of the 34 members of TMLA team individually qualified to compete at the New York State Speech and Debate Championship Tournament at Hofstra University.
To illustrate the varied talent of the team, at one tournament held at the Metropolitan Expeditionary Learning School in Forest Hills, a number of Mary Louis speakers won awards:
In Student Congress, Senior Cassidy Barry placed 3rd and Sophomore Christina Kundu placed 7th.
In Original Oratory, Junior Bridget Farrell placed 6th.
In Public Forum Debate, the team of Juniors Eliana Cortez and Rumaisa Rawshan placed 4th.
In Extemporaneous Speaking, Senior Anastasia Poulos placed 4th and Freshwoman Ashley Celidon placed 7th.
In Oral Interpretation, Junior Kaitlyn Chesleigh placed 3rd and Senior Savannah Wilson placed 9th.
Overall, the Student Congress team placed second in the tournament and the speech team placed fourth.
