Mariel Wins 12 Awards for Journalism

TMLA student newspaper Mariel took home a total 12 awards including the big win for General Excellence at The Tablet’s annual High School Press Awards ceremony on May 10.  The Awards ceremony honored some of the outstanding journalism in school newspapers from five local high schools.

In addition to the General Excellence award, TMLA won awards for Best Front Page: “Farewell Forty-One”; Best Feature Story Third place: “Social Media Shock Over Celebrity Engagements” by Katarina Cordero; Best Editorial – Honorable Mention: “Farewell Mariel – April Fool’s Edition”; Best Column – The Roger Payne Memorial Award: “HeART Cottage Corner” by Rene Walker;  Best Sports Story: “Swim-tastic Season” by Stephanie Starzynski and Chloe Chang; 2 awards for Best Photograph: “Saving Lives With Pints” and “Glee Club Singing” by Katherine Colin-Keita;  2 awards for Best Multiple-Photo Display: “Around the World in 80 Minutes: Cultural Harmony 2019” and “A Unique Artist”;  2 awards for Best Editorial Cartoon: “Naomi Osaka” by Charunya Bheem and “Pardoning the Turkey” by Nina Kropf.

“It’s the whole team that makes it happen, and I wouldn’t be able to make it happen without the whole team. It’s really rewarding to see all the hard work throughout the year pay off, and something to look forward to next year too – passing it down to future editors,” said senior Catherine Costigan, editor of the Mariel.
