Through the Literary Arts Diploma Designation, TMLA further supports students who demonstrate exceptional talent and commitment to the literary arts. This prestigious distinction provides students with the opportunity to engage in a rigorous five-year course of study, emphasizing both academic excellence and extracurricular involvement in literary and speech organizations. TMLA’s commitment to fostering creativity is also evident in the Mariel, the student-run newspaper, where students gain hands-on experience in journalism. From writing and editing to photography and layout design using Adobe InDesign, students on the Mariel staff become proficient in all aspects of high school journalism. Participation in high school journalism competitions further enhances their learning and provides opportunities for recognition. Through these experiences, students not only develop their communication skills but also contribute to the vibrant culture of creativity and expression at TMLA.

The Fine Arts Department at The Mary Louis Academy plays a vital role in fostering creativity, self-expression, and critical thinking among our students.

The Art Program provides a platform for students to develop technical skills and artistic vision across various media. Classes such as Studio Art, Drawing, and Painting allow students to delve into traditional art forms, while Digital Art opens the door to modern creative expression. Advanced opportunities, such as AP Art and AP Art History, provide students with a deeper understanding of artistic movements and the mastery needed to produce their own works. Whether creating two-dimensional pieces or exploring historical and contemporary art, students are empowered to discover their passions and connect with their unique voices.

In parallel, the Music Program inspires a love for music through both participation and appreciation. With opportunities to join the Orchestra, Glee Club, or Select Chorus, students are given the chance to express themselves through vocal and instrumental performance. For those seeking a deeper understanding, courses such as Music in Our Lives, History of Musical Styles and Theory, and AP Music Theory open doors to music theory and history. The department also offers private instrument instruction for those wishing to refine their musical talents.

Theater Arts classes are also a part of the Fine Arts Department, providing students with opportunities for creative expression through performance and stagecraft. In addition to the core curriculum, Girls Enjoying Math (GEM), a student-led club, offers exciting extracurricular opportunities to explore the world of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). Through GEM, students are encouraged to discover math-related careers and engage in hands-on learning experiences that enhance their academic journey. The club provides a supportive space where girls can confidently share ideas, collaborate on projects, and build lasting connections with like-minded peers. GEM aims to instill a passion for
math and empower young women to pursue STEM fields with confidence.

For those who are passionate about pursuing careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics, the TMLA STEM Diploma Designation offers a specialized pathway to further enhance students’ knowledge and skills in these fields.

This program is designed for students who demonstrate a strong commitment to academic excellence in both math and science. To earn the STEM designation, students must meet rigorous academic standards, participate in STEM-related extracurricular activities, and engage in additional learning opportunities such as scientific lectures, field trips, and competitions. Students who successfully complete the program and maintain a high academic average will earn the STEM Designation with Honor, signifying their achievement and readiness for future studies and careers in the sciences and mathematics.

Physical Education classes focus on fostering teamwork, physical endurance, and skill mastery in a variety of sports and fitness activities. Students are encouraged to set personal goals, build confidence, and cultivate lifelong habits of physical activity. The program also includes units on leadership, cooperation, and respect for others in competitive and non-competitive settings.

Dance classes offer students a creative outlet to explore movement and self-expression. With a curriculum that may include ballet, modern, jazz, and cultural dance styles, students develop coordination, rhythm, and an appreciation for artistic performance. Dance also fosters discipline and emotional expression, aligning with the school’s mission of nurturing students' talents and individuality.

Our Pre-Med Diploma Designation Program is designed for highly motivated students with aspirations in medicine, dentistry, nursing, veterinary science, pharmacy, and other health-related fields. This competitive program challenges students with advanced coursework in chemistry, biology, and anatomy, as well as Greek and Latin language studies to bolster medical vocabulary. Students
complete a hospital internship, giving them firsthand experience in a clinical setting, and participate in scientific lectures and field trips that deepen their understanding of the healthcare field. Research Opportunities that Transform Curiosity into Expertise

The Science Research Program offers selected students a chance to conduct original, independent research over three years. Starting in sophomore year, participants develop their own research topics under the mentorship of professionals in the natural and social sciences. They learn the entire process, from choosing a topic to conducting experiments, and finally presenting their findings as seniors. Through this experience, students acquire invaluable research skills, develop intellectual independence, and gain a competitive edge for college and beyond.

Building Leadership Skills Through Lab Assistance

TMLA also offers a Laboratory Assistant Program where students can earn credit by assisting teachers in various science labs, from Living Environment to Physics. This program provides hands-on experience in lab preparation and peer support, fostering both leadership and technical skills in our young scientists.

Our Social Studies programs are a vital part of this mission, immersing students in rigorous courses and real-world experiences that spark curiosity, deepen understanding, and build essential skills.

One shining example is our American History and Civics Diploma Designation, offered to sophomores who demonstrate academic excellence and a passion for civic engagement. This program immerses students in the study of American  history and constitutional issues, instilling a strong sense of citizenship and inspiring students to become leaders in the political process. Through this program, students not only meet high academic standards but also engage actively with the world around them, participating in student government, social justice initiatives, and activities that promote cultural awareness and leadership.

In addition, our Current Issues course brings today’s most pressing social, political, and environmental topics into the classroom. By examining key constitutional and societal issues, students develop a nuanced understanding of the forces shaping our world. This knowledge enables them to form informed opinions, explore solutions, and become change-makers on issues that matter to them and their communities.

Our Religious Studies Department provides students with opportunities to grow in faith, leadership, and service. The Religious Studies Diploma Designation offers a rigorous program where students engage in research on faith-based topics, participate in service events, and present their findings, integrating faith with action.

Students also live out Gospel values through retreats at the Sisters of St. Joseph Motherhouse and hands-on Christian service, such as charity walkathons, food pantry volunteering, and environmental cleanups. Programs like Rosary Mornings and the Student Minister initiative further encourage spiritual growth and leadership, fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment for all.

TMLA’s World Languages Department offers a comprehensive curriculum in French, Italian, and Spanish, including honors and advanced placement course.

With a focus on linguistic proficiency and cultural exploration, the department also offers students the opportunity to earn the World Languages and Cultures Diploma Designation, a prestigious recognition for those who excel in their studies and deepen their global awareness. Specialized courses, like Greek and Latin for Scientific Study, allow students to explore ancient languages and their influence on modern fields like medicine and science.

For students seeking deeper global awareness, the World Languages and Cultures Seminar enhances their studies through projects and exploration of global cultures via film, music, literature, and art. Students are encouraged to pursue at least three years of language study, equipping them with skills to thrive in advanced studies or careers in healthcare, science, and international relations.

At TMLA, learning happens both on and off campus. Each year, students have the chance to travel with faculty and classmates during February and Easter breaks to destinations like France and Italy, bringing language and culture lessons to life. Closer  to home, our faculty embrace the rich cultural offerings of New York City, enhancing the learning experience with unique opportunities. For instance, TMLA students, parents, and staff recently attended Puccini’s La Bohème at the Metropolitan Opera, experiencing Italian language and culture firsthand.
