Adopt-a-Grandparent
Moderator:
Mrs. Grace West
Purpose:
The Adopt-A-Parent program was created to improve the quality of life for nursing home residents. This program gives students a chance to give to the community as well as put a smile on an elderly person’s face.
Once a month, the members go to The Hillside Manor Nursing Home. Students are assigned a "grandparent" with whom she spends an hour. The students discuss their lives with them, and even talk about what they want for the future.
Meeting:
1 to 2 times a month
Activities with Senior Citizens:
Games such as bingo, checkers, other board games
Reading Books & Magazines
Playing Games (cards)
Celebrate holidays such as Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Mothers’ Day and Fathers’ Day.
Awards:
TMLA Peacemaker Award in 2000-2001 year
The program has been publicized in various newspapers. One such paper is the Queens Tribune. The students, as well as the residents, love the program.
