Summer Reading: 
Founding Mothers by Cokie Roberts

An exam will be given on this reading the first week of classes.

Assignment: 
 Read Chapters 1-4 of The American Pageant.  Outline these chapters on loose leaf and place in a soft covered binder that you will use for the course.
  Be sure to include the financing, motivation for founding, and political, social, and economic organization
 of each area:  the plantation colonies, New England, and the middle colonies.  Also include a definition of “joint stock”, proprietary”, and “Royal” or “Charter” colonies, the degree of self-government, and extent of participation, economic base, labor, opportunities for social and political mobility, education, etc.

Write an essay comparing and contrasting the political, economic, and social aspects of Massachusetts Bay and the Chesapeake colonies.  This essay is to be typed and handed in on the first day of classes.
